Guided response week 12

I was recently browsing around in my old emails and i am apart of the fight to save the japan dolphins. So I got an email with a link to an article Titled "Get educated" I started reading it and it brought me to tears, just like the movie "The Cove". Which if you feel as passionate about animals and thier rights as I do I strongly suggest you watch this movie its pretty powerful and moving.  This article was talking about the dolphins in Taiji, Japan that are brutally murdered every september. I don't feel like as many people are aware of this as the should be and I really think we need to spread the word. Every year for six months dolphins are driven into what is called the cove in japan, either fishmen go out and drive them into the cove or the dolphins swim in themselves. But either way the cove is a trap for all doplphins and once they enter the cove as much as it pains me to say this they don't leave. The murders simply think that dolphins are pests and a nuisence. Once all the six month build up of dolphins reach the cove that september they are brutally killed. Some may be saved for captivity and or for zoos, dolphin shows,  and what most of the japense population doesn't know is that the rest is used for a small minority of meat. Research has shown that dolphins are highly intellgent creatures know when you think of a dolphins the word pests certainly doesn't come to mind. Taiji japan has dolphins statues figurines and is made to look like a dolphin loving city, but it real life its a dolphins worst nightmare. The fishermen say they kill the dolphins "quickly and humanley" now is there such a thing? The method they use to kill dolphins is soo unbelievable you have to wittness it yourself, and once those images are seen by the naked eye they will never leave your head, i know it hasn't for me. Because of the movie "The Cove" its made me want to fight like hell to do anything in my power to help these dolphins.

You can go to savejapandolphins.org and learn more. There is also a petion you can sign to help the fight.
A little goes a long way <3

free choice week 11

As I’ve been reading my novel Wintergirls, I keep coming across the questions that I always asked in the novel Thirteen Reasons Why. How can girls reach the point to do something so drastic that even effects their health. I don’t understand how girls can come to the conclusion that being able to see your ribs and bones is even remotely attractive.  Who wants a body like that?  This book reminds me of the problem that a model had when she modeled for Ralph Lauren had a few months ago, where a European ad agency made her body look so unhealthy and unreal it turned heads. It was a big conspiracy and a talk of that nation. Just think of what kind of influence it shows to young girls and women today? It seems like more and more stars now are starting to come out with their battle on anorexia and or bulimia. Just yesterday I was watching Portia De Rossi on Oprah talking about her battle with both, she discussed how that made her feel and what triggered it all. She said she went to a dress fitting for a commercial she was going to be in and the clothing designer was getting frustrated because no one told her what size Portia was. She screamed at the agency say “No one told me she wasn’t a size four.”  She was actually a size eight. She told Portia “face it honey just have big legs.” And those words triggered it all. Portia starved herself into a whopping 84 pounds. Its mind blowing how someone could manipulate thier body to that point. It really goes to show you what words can do, and what any girl or women of any age will do or how far they will go to reach their glory.

Below is the ralph lauren add & a protia de rossi at her skinniest wieght:

Is that attractive?

Winter girls (week 10)

1)“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
I am that girl.
I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.
I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.

I chose this phrase because I think it emboides the whole book. I don't think most people that aren't teenage girls fully understand how big of an issue wieght and apperance is in a young teens world. How teens will do anything to look good, which is why annorexia is not uncommon amoung youg girls. I just don't understand how girls can belittle themselves so much to get to the point where they don't even eat. I can't even image myself in those shoes.

2)Eating was hard. Breathing was hard. Living was hardest

I feel like this sentence says a lot. I think there comes to a point where you can only ignore a problem before it all starts to unfold. Its kind of like a recovered addict after one little cheat you're back to where you started and helpless. And how to you even begin to live your life normally when you know you have a serious problem that you try to hide.

3)I breathe in slowly. Food is life. I exhale, take another breath. Food is life. And that's the problem. When you're alive, people can hurt you. It's easier to crawl into a bone cage or a snowdrift of confusion. It's easier to lock everybody out.
But it's a lie.
I feel like this passages shows that the main character Lia is afraid of life and all it has to offer so instead she chooses death on the skinny side.

4)There is no magic cure, no making it all go away forever. There are only small steps upward; an easier day, an unexpected laugh, a mirror that doesn't matter anymore.

I think Lia means that she is waiting for the day where she is carefree and she doesn't have to be unsatisfied with what she sees in the mirror. She wants to see the day where she can get up look in the mirror and love herself for every freckle and flaw.

5)"The ghosts want to taste me. Their hands shake out, fingers open wide."

Im pretty sure this mean that lia's annorexia wants to take over her life, and she can feel it slowly bit by bit taking over.

6)I keep thinking that if I could just unzip my skin, step out of this body, then I would see who I really am.

This quotes meanst that when lia looks at herself all she sees is skin and bones. Nothing more.

7) "I need to run, to fly, beating my wings so hard I can't hear anything over the pounding of my heart. Rain, rain, rain, drowning me."

I feel like this quote is basically like lia standing crowded room screaming at the top of her lungs but nobody seems to notice. all she wants to do is act out make a scene but she can't even work the nerve.

8)Yesterdays dirt and mistakes have moved through me. I am shiny and pink inside, clean. Empty is good. Empty is strong."

I think here lia is trying to talk herself into thinking that the past doesnt matter, and she's really strong when at the moment shes really not.

9)"There is grease on the stove, blood in the air, and angry words piled in the corners."

I feel like this quote shows signifacance to the quote "theres a elephant in the room" like the people close to her knows she has a problem but its not disscussed its goes through thier minds but not a word is said.

10)"We haunt ourselves, and sometimes we do such a good job, we lose track of reality."

I think quote really means we are our biggest critic and enemy and we can talk ourselves in and out of anything, things that somtimes aren't even really what we make them to be.

Free choice blog! Week 7!

I was browsing around the internet today and went to check my email and there was an article on yahoo talking about skimpy cheerleading uniforms. The article was talking about how cheerleaders in flordia had to beg to wear their skirts on game day because their uniforms were too skimpy for the new dress code. Where as the cheerleaders in Connecticut begged school officals to make their uniforms less skimpy. I don't know if it really strikes me for the girls that want skimpy uniforms or don't want skimpy uniforms. It seems like the more and more years grow the less and less clothes are required. But now again it does seem like every school is getting uniforms now a days too. Im not sure if that is why girls dress so skimpy out of school because of the uniforms, or because of the bad inflence from the media. But it does make me happy to see that girls now have a concern about their image and the way that they dress. Which a very smart decision on thier part. I feel like skimpy outfit and uniforms could put a downer on girls self esteem, and studies show that college cheerleaders who were uniforms that expose their midriffs show a extremely higher risk of an eating disorder. Which really when you think about sounds right on. So it just shows which young women now have standards and which don't.

Week 6 guided response

I was recently browsing upon the Septemeber issue of Seventeen magazine, when I came upon an intresting article. The article was entitled "beat the body bullies," I felt like this topic really tied in with our research about bullying and Thirteen Reasons Why. This article states that everyone has a body critic, a person who points out a flaw or digs at the difference of your apperance that instantly makes you feel bad about yourself. Sometimes it can even be a close friend that shoots out compliments at your apperance but they feel more like slams. Complements like "That top is perfect for you, you can't even tell your flat" or "Wow you totally fill out that dress."Then everyone time you look at your body you pick out the flaws, the size of your hips, your chest. Women and young women everywhere should embrace thier size and love their body. God gave you that body for a reason, and you have two choices. Be your biggest critic or take what you got and embrace it! The article states that when hurtful words and insults are used against you like that you really take a minute to think about the person behind them. Usually the problem isn't you its them, they're insecure about themselves, so they use the insults to make them feel better. We need to make peace with our bodies, if we run around sulking about every little curve wheres that going to get us? We need to be happy and take it as it goes. Why try to fit into a size 0 when that is clearly not your body type or size. We're not that little girl anymore that can just slide into anything, everyone has a different body type. Go ahead grab whatever size fits those curves at work it girl!

13 Reason's why (free choice)

As I've bee reading the book 13 reasons why I keep questioning the motaive of Hannah Baker. Right now it doesn't really make a lot of sense that Hannah would take her life from such light wieght events. Maybe she's just being overly sensitive. Maybe she has a lot of phycological problems that could of been fixed if she asked for help. It seems like Hannah has a good head on her shoulders, but she doesn't know how to stand up and take defense for herself. I just think maybe if she had a thicker skin or was raised to stand up for herself she wouldn't of taken her life. Maybe if she would of seeking a different revege. But that's two words that you can question over and over again in a lifetime "what if". You can't go back in the past. I hope that the story goes into a deeper state and I will come to find out the real pain hannah went through, and I will begin to understand her.

Free choice blog: Week 3.

I just recieved my October issue of Glamour magazine and I came upon an article titled "These Bags Are Just for You!". The article was discussing several fashion disigned totes that are for sale and when you purchase one of these bags all the proceeds go to the Gulf Relief. Which really intreset me because it involves two of the things I care about fashion and animals. People don't think much about the gulf because they think it doesn't effect them. But they really need to think about all the innocent lives that are at stake and how many animals are in danger! I would do anything to save those animals live and give them a voice that they don't have. The articles also discusses how people are living in a superfical zoolander world where they only care about what's in thier wallets, closets, and thier self image. But amongst all the superfical there are plenty of people who are aware of the gulf disaster and are eager to make a difference. Which they are because they are the disigners of the totes that are for sale. I think this is a smart idea on they're part because the are knocking two birds with one stone. Teaching teens and young women like myself gulf awareness, getting the word out there and getting money to make a difference. And what more to get teens intreseted then fashion.

Week 4 Guided Response

In October's issue of "Glamour" I read an article with the title "Will the internet kill magazines? Did instant coffee kill coffee?" I Think this title was rather creative and it made you really sit and think about the future and that past. Just to think about the technology when you were just in diapers compared to the technology now when your now in college is a huge difference. As well as everything else that is completely different. Studies show that now typical young adults read more then your adults. The question "Did instant coffee kill coffee" makes you really think how things develope over the years and how things go from somewhat interacting with people and actually doing somewhat manual labor to now holding a conversation with somebody without even seeing them or actually using your mouth to speak to them. But to answer the question will the internet kill magazines? Magazines do what the internet doesn't it holds deeper connections, they hold relationships, and ingage us in a different way then just clicking a mouse. But the future can only speak for itself.
